Calgary dentists find more cavities in kids after removal of fluoride from water supply

In 2011 Calgary City Council voted in favour of removing fluoride from the local water supply. This decision was made as an effort to prevent tooth decay in vulnerable groups such as the poor, children and the elderly.

However, this has now initiated new problems for young patients’ dental health. Dr. Sarah Hulland, president of the Alberta Academy of Pediatric Dentistry said, “kids are coming into her office with bigger cavities than historically seen before.” Additionally, other pediatric dentists such as Dr. Leonard Smith claims that there was an “improvement in his patients’ teeth after fluoride was introduced.”

Various dentists argue that fluoride should be added back to the water supply due to this recent issue.
